Queen Latifah was conceived Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah, the second child of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her social politics and acting skills as well as her talent for rhyme. When she was 8 years older, a Muslim friend gave her the nickname Latifah which means "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and performed for the first time in public when she sang a rendition of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah was impressed by her mother, who was always in contact with the students and music. Mark James, a local disc jockey who is also called D.J., was invited to the party. Mark the 45 King, was invited to perform at a school dance.
